DETROIT, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co(F.N) has doubled its production target for the F-150 Lightning because of strong early demand for the full-sized electric pickup truck ahead of its 2022 launch, and the company plans to spend an additional $850 million to meet that target, several people and suppliers familiar with the plans said.

New U.S. light-duty vehicle sales declined sharply in 2020 but all-electric vehicle (EV) sales continued to rise from the previous year. Although EV sales are a small percentage of overall new light-duty vehicle sales, they rose from 1.4% of all sales in 2019 to 1.7% in 2020. Hybrid vehicle sales also rose, while plug-in hybrid vehicle sales have declined from a peak (0.7% share of the market) in 2018. Conventional new light-duty vehicle sales declined to 12.7 million in 2020, down from 15.3 million in 2019.

BMW Group will launch four full-electric cars in the next two years as the automaker accelerates its shift to electrified models. 

"We are fully committed to electric cars wherever the use of battery-electric drive trains makes sense, and it is possible because the conditions are right," BMW CEO Oliver Zipse said.

Bill Williams, a real estate developer on Chicago's West Side, was an early adopter of electric vehicles, at first leasing a Tesla Model S before recently upgrading to a Taycan, the first electric car made by Porsche.

His motivation to drive an electric vehicle, or EV, was largely that the technological novelty intrigued him, he said, although there was another reason: "I'm not saying I'm an environmentalist, but I do think about the Earth, and I do care about the future of the planet. So if it's not too late, I'd like to be someone who's part of the solution."
